When I was younger I filled up one of my favorite action figures with maggots, and then out of disgust, flushed it down the toilet. That bizarre incident is essentially what sparked “My Hero” into existence. Following my passion for story telling and love for comics, I decided to focus my efforts to write and illustrate a graphic novel.
I had one goal in mind when beginning this project: I wanted to create something I would love when I was younger. Using my action figure/toilet memory as a springboard I jumped headfirst into exploring what happened after he was flushed down the toilet. Ideas and characters I wanted to explore overwhelmed me. I wanted to not only tell an interesting story but also allow it to preach the underlying message of hope. Hope has had a big part in my life and I wanted to reflect that theme in my book. The worm particularly is the representation of that idea. I based the worm and toy after my sister and I. She’s the biggest inspiration in my life and gives me hope every single day. We all need someone like her in our lives, and I wanted to emphasize that with the relationship between the toy and the worm.
